The 1971 MLB season has reached the All Star break. As most of the players go their seperate ways for a 3 day break, 28 top players from each league will head to Detroit Michigan for the All Star Game tuesday night at Tiger Stadium.
At the break, the Detroit Tigers in the AL East and the Oakland A's in the AL West find themselves in first place in their divisions. Norm Cash and Mickey Lolich(photo) have helped lead the Tigers with Cash hitting .315, 19 hr's, 58 rbi and Lolich posting a 14-6 record, 2.56 era and throwing an incredible 197 innings already this season! Vida Blue 15-4, 2.40 era and Reggie Jackson .287, 24 hr's, and 59 rbi have led the A's. Among other top performers in the AL so far this season, the Chicago White Sox have provided the top 4 hitters in the league. The 3rd baseman Bill Melton(photo) is 4th in ba .328, 1st in hr's-25 and 1st in rbi-74.
In the NL, the Pittsburg Pirates in the East and the San Francisco Giants in the West lead their divisions. The Pirates have a formadable lineup featuring Manny Sanguillen .360 ba (1st in the NL), Roberto Clemente .325 ba, Bob Robertson .314 ba. 24 hr's 57 rbi, and Willie Stargell (photo) .309, 25 hr's(1st in the NL) and 66 rbi. They are also getting good pitching with Steve Blass posting a 12-4 record 2.40 era and Dave Giusti notching 18 saves. Bobby Bonds .305 13hr's 49rbi, Willie Mays .297 11 57 and Willie McCovey .290 14 55 have led the Giants hitting attack while Gaylord Perry has a 12-5 ptiching record to go along with a 1.80 era! Other top performances in the NL: Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves is hitting .328 18 hr's 68 rbi and Ferguson Jenkins(photo) of the Chicago Cubs leads all pitchers with a 14-5 record.
