1971 Replay All Star Game

July 13, 1971

The MLB All Star game was played at Tiger Stadium in Detroit Michigan tonight and fans witnessed an exciting battle between the AL and NL that saw the NL prevail 6-4 by scoring 2 runs in the ninth inning, breaking a 4-4 tie. The hometown hosts of the game, the Detroit Tigers, fielded 5 players on the AL squad: pitchers Mickey Lolich, Joe Coleman, Tom Timmermann and 2 starters on the field; catcher Bill Freehan and 1st baseman Norm Cash.
The NL scored a run in the top of the 1st when Cinncinati Reds 1st sacker Lee May drove in a run with a 2 out single off AL starter Mickey Lolich. Norm Cash tied the game at 1 apiece with a
mammoth home run into the rightfield upper deck in the bottom of the 2nd inning off NY Met pitcher Tom Seaver. After Cash's homerun, the AL loaded the bases with no outs, but Leo Cardenas of the Minnesota Twins struck out and New York Yankee Bobby Murcer hit into a doubleplay ending the AL threat. Bill Freehan doubled home a run in the 3rd inning to give the AL a 2-1 lead. In the 5th inning, with the AL leading 3-1, San Francisco Giant Willie Mays hit a 3 run homer off Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles giving the NL a brief 4-3 lead. After the AL tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the 5th the pitchers took control and shut down the hitters the next 3 innings. Finally, in the top of the ninth inning, rookie catcher Earl Williams of the Atlanta Braves hit a 2 run homer off Chicago White Sox pitcher (catcher Earl Williams) Tommy John. Don Wilson of the Houston Astros set the AL down in order in the bottom of the ninth ending a very entertaining game with the NL coming out on top 6-4.
