1934 AL Replay- June 18, Det. at NY

June 18, 1934

The Detroit Tigers won the final game of this 4 game series against the New York Yankees 3-2. After dropping the first 3 games that saw the teams score a record number of runs, Detroit finally got some good pitching from starter Firpo Marberry (pictured) and their bullpen. Marberry, who got his 11th win of the season, held NY to 1 hit until the 7th inning when Frank Crosetti hit a 2 run hr to tie the game 2-2. But the Tigers came right back in the top of the 8th when Heinie Schuble, pinch-hitting for Marberry, came thru with a 2-out run scoring single. That would prove to be the winning run as Detroit's manager Mickey Cochrane used 4 relievers from the bullpen who combined to hold on for the win, Elden Auker getting the save. The Yankees now lead the Tigers by 2 games in the AL pennant race.

1934 AL Replay- June 17, Det. at NY

June 17, 1934

Game 2 of this 4 game series saw the New York Yankees destroy the Detroit Tigers 15-8. In another slugfest at Yankee Stadium, the redhot Yankees had a 6-0 lead after 2 innings of play and went on to crush the Tigers in an easy win for the home team. The game was more lopsided than the final score indicates because the Tigers got 5 of their 8 runs in the 9th inning before New York finally closed it out. Lefty Gomez picked up the win, his 11th of the season, and New York now has a 2 game lead over Detroit in the AL.

1934 AL Replay- June 16, Det. at NY

June 16, 1934

Game 1 of a 4 game series between the two teams tied at the top of the AL standings was a wild slugfest that saw the New York Yankees come out on top of the Detroit Tigers 14-10. No lead was safe in this game that featured 5 homeruns, 27 hits and baserunners on every inning due to the 17 walks issued by the struggling pitchers of both clubs. Babe Ruth (pictured) had perhaps the biggest hit of the game when he hit a 3 run hr in the 7th giving the Yankees a 12-8 lead. The Tigers left 14 men on base but it was the woeful pitching that did them in, allowing New York to claim the top spot in the AL.

It was a real barn-burner day in Yankee Stadium as streaking New York Yankees

finally pulled ahead to stay, winning a very exciting game by a streaking New

York Yankees to 10 score.

Babe Ruth enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He smacked a single in the 1st

inning and rifled a three-run blast (his 15th of the season) in the 7th

inning. Detroit was not lacking for run support as they scored in 6 separate

innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is

also needed to win ballgames.

Jimmie Deshong(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 2 and 1/3

innings. Eldon Auker(3-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. Charlie

Gehringer had 4 hits and 4 RBI in a losing cause for Detroit.

Win:McColl(2-3) Loss:Gallivan(2-3) Save:Russell(5th)
Homeruns- Z.Bonura(12th)

Fred Schulte hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI and Alex McColl pitched 5 strong
innings at Griffith Stadium as the Washington Senators beat the Chicago White
Sox by the count of 13 to 12.

Washington bats came alive with a big 8th inning when they exploded for 9 runs
on 7 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Schulte who made the
Washington fans a happy lot when he doubled plating three runs. Chicago
threatened in the 9th but Washington was able to put down the rally.

McColl(2-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing no
runs. McColl got help from Jack Russell who was credited with his 5th save.
Phil Gallivan(2-3) was the loser in relief.

'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Jimmy Dykes 'but it's losing the close ones
that really hurt.'

CLEVELAND AT PHILADELPHIA

Homeruns- B.Knickerbocker(1st), O.Hale(2nd), H.Trosky(20th)

Billy Knickerbocker had 4 hits and 5 RBI and Oral Hildebrand shutout
Philadelphia while allowing the Cleveland bullpen a day-off at Shibe Park as
the Cleveland Indians belted the struggling Philadelphia Athletics by the
count of 14 to 0.

Knickerbocker was unconscious all day. The Philadelphia fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He
delivered a solo blast (his 1st of the season) in the 1st inning, laced a
base-knock knocking in a run in the 4th inning, banged out a single in the
8th inning and tripled emptying the bases in the 9th inning. Cleveland
rapped out 18 hits for the afternoon.

Hildebrand(3-5) was credited with the shutout. Roy Mahaffey(1-6) ended up with
the loss. He was unable to control the Cleveland offense and allowed 11 hits
and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Knickerbocker said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I
don't overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing
on it.'

In a tight game it was the New York Yankees 4, the floundering St. Louis
Browns 2 at Yankee Stadium.

Danny Macfayden(7-1) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 7 hits and 3
walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. St. Louis threatened in the 9th but their rally
came up short.

Jimmie Deshong gained credit for his 3rd save. Bobo Newsom(3-6) took the
loss. He pitched 7 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 walk.

3,757 fans were treated to a fine game at Fenway Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Boston Red Sox won by the
slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Boston came out on top
in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Dusty Cooke drew a walk.
Rick Ferrell stepped into the batter's box and he delivered a single. Lyn
Lary then drew a walk to load the bases. Lou Legett followed and he hit a
single giving Boston the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.
Boston had 11 hits for the afternoon.

1934 NL Replay- June 16

Trying to "print to blog" the html file of the current info from my 1934 replay. Everything shows up in the 'editing posts' view on Blogger but not on the blog post. The right half of the page is missing in the blog post. Any way to fix this?

1934 AL Replay Recap-June 1

June 1, 1934

The 1st two months of the '34 season are over for the AL and the Detroit Tigers are in 1st place with a 4.5 game lead over the 2nd place New York Yankees. While the season is still young, it looks like Detroit and New York will be the two teams battling for the AL Crown this year because the rest of the league seems to be mediocre at best. The other 6 teams in the junior circut are all playing sub .500 ball. There have been some good individual performences on these teams like Heinie Manush's .403 average for the Washington club and Hal Trosky's (pictured) 16 HR, and 43 RBI for the Cleveland Indians, but the Tigers and Yankees look to be the runaway favorites for the'34 AL title.
Detroit has been hitting on all cylinders since the season started and have a combined team BA of .301. Charlie Gehringer .365, Goose Goslin .355 and Hank Greenberg .331 have led the way for the Detroit ballclub. Pitcher Firpo Marberry is tied with Lefty Gomez of the Yanks for most wins in the AL with 7 while Elden Auker has been supperb coming out of the bullpen and spot-starting for the Tigers. For New York, slugger Lou Gehrig (pictured) has been putting up impressive numbers: .369 BA, 13 HR, 48 RBI and is at or near the top of all 3 hitting catagories in the AL.
