October 11,1971  The Detroit Tigers did it again today winning a thriller from the San Francisco Giants, this time coming from behind to win it in the 12th inning 4-3. Juan Marichal and Joe Coleman hooked up in a great pitching duel but both pitchers were gone by the time this one entered the 12th inning with the teams tied at 2. Ken Henderson of the Giants hit a 2-out solo home run off Tom Timmermann in the top of the 12th to put San Francisco up 3-2. In the bottom of the 12th, Tony Taylor pinch-hitting for Eddie Brinkman led off with a walk off Don McMahon. Taylor then moved up to 3rd when catcher Fran Healy threw wildly into centerfield on Tony's stolen base attempt. Jerry Johnson relieved McMahon to face pinch-hitter Dalton Jones (pictured) who was batting for Timmermann. Jones lofted a towering 2-run homer into the rightfield upperdeck and sent the Detroit fans into a wild celebration! The Tigers lead 2 games to none now and head to San Francisco tomorrow morning for the next 3(?) games of the Series. Les Cain (14-6) and John Cumberland (11-9) are scheduled to start the next game for their clubs 2 days from now. |

Al Kaline lofted one into the 'cheap seats' at Tiger Stadium where the Detroit
Tigers beat the San Francisco Giants in 12 innings 4 to 3.
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Detroit won the
hard fought contest in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Tony
Taylor initiated the scoring spurt when he drew a walk. Billy Martin then
called for a steal which was successful. Dalton Jones then cracked a two-run
shot (his 2nd of the season) resulting in an exciting win for Detroit and a
wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Despite losing, San
Francisco out-hit Detroit 13 to 10.
Tom Timmermann(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Jerry
Johnson(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter
giving up 1 hit and no walks.
