| October 3, 1971 The Pittsburgh Pirates evened up this NLCS 1-1 by defeating the San Francisco Giants in extra innings 4-3. Both clubs got good pitching from their starters Doc Ellis and Juan Marichal, and it looked like the Pirates were going to regret failing to score in the 6th inning when they loaded the bases with no outs but failed to get a run in. The game went into extra innings where in the bottom of the 10th, Willie Stargell hit the 3rd pitch from reliever Steve Hamilton into the centerfield seats for a no-doubt-about-it game winning homerun! The series will now shift to San Francisco where Bob Johnson 16-5 is scheduled to start for the Pirates while John Cumberland 11-9 will start for the Giants. |

contest in the 10th inning. Stargell hit a bases-empty home run (his 1st of
the season) resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a raucous
post-game celebration by the home town fans. Pittsburgh had a total of 8
