October 2, 1971 The San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opening game of the '71 NL Championship Series. Pittsburgh led early in the game but after Pirates starter Steve Blass had to leave the game in the 6th due to an undisclosed injury, the Giants offense unloaded on the Pittsburgh bullpen and ended up winning by a score of 10-8. San Francisco was one team the Pirates had trouble with during the regular season, going 6-6 against them, and now face an uphill battle in this short, best of 5 game series. With only one game left at home, tomorrow's, the Pirates must get a good game from starter Doc Ellis who was 15-10 during the regular season. His pitching opponent will be Juan Marichal who was 18-12. |
