| October 5, 1971 The Detroit Tigers won a wild game today, defeating the Oakland A's 8-7 with a dramatic 2 run homer by Willie Horton in the bottom of the 9th. The win puts the Tigers up 2-1 in this ALCS. The lead changed hands 5 times in this game that once again saw the Tigers flex their muscles, hitting a total of 4 homers in the game. Gates Brown, getting his first start in the series, hit 2 solo shots and when Norm Cash hit a homerun in the bottom of the 8th it looked as if the Tigers were going to win 6-5. But Oakland scored 2 runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead 7-6 before Horton provided the final dramatic moment by hitting the game winning blast off A's reliever Rollie Fingers. In a rematch of game 1 starters, Vida Blue will try to even the series going up against Mickey Lolich in game 4 tomorrow. |

Gates Brown cracked 2 homeruns as the Detroit Tigers won in dramatic fashion
over the Oakland A's by a score of 8 to 7 at Tiger Stadium.
Detroit had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs. Aurelio
Rodriguez led off and he drew a walk. Mickey Stanley stepped up next and he
laid down a sacrifice bunt. Willie Horton then popped a two-run clout over
the fence (his 3rd of the season) giving Detroit the victory and sending the
49,612 home-town fans home happy. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw
the lead change 5 times.
The win was credited to Bill Denehy(1-0) who went 1/3 of an inning allowing no
runs. Rollie Fingers(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.
