| October 3, 1971 Mickey Lolich and Vida Blue, the 2 top pitchers in the AL this year, matched up in the opening game of the ALCS today and Detroit came out on top 5-3. Lolich gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning then went on to complete the game allowing 1 more run the rest of the way. The Tigers won in the same fashion they have all year...with the long ball. Detroit manager Billy Martin decided to start Tony Taylor(pictured) at thirdbase for his bat instead of regular slick fielder Aurelio Rodriquez and the move paid off when Taylor hit a 2 run blast in the 3rd inning tying the game at 2. Leftfielder Willie Horton, who narrowly missed a homerun in the 1st, also connected for a 2 run homer in the 3rd and the Tigers were up 4-2. Detroit 2nd baseman Dick McAuliffe added a solo shot in the 7th off Blue and though the A's threatened in the 9th, Lolich was able to close the door on the A's giving the Tigers the first game of the series. Catfish Hunter 24-11 will take on Joe Coleman 23-12 tomorrow to try and even things up. |

Coliseum as the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland A's 5 to 3.
Detroit came up with 4 runs in the 3rd inning. That was all the runs
