1971 AL Replay- Sept. 26 NY vs. Det.

September 26, 1971
The Detroit Tigers won in dramatic fashion tonight defeating the NY Yankees 7- 6 in 10 innings. The game was tied at 4 after 9 innings of play with all the Tiger runs coming courtesy of the long ball. Willie Horton hit a solo shot and Al Kaline(pictured) hit a 3 run blast in regulation, but after NY scored 2 runs in the top of the 10th off reliever Tom Timmermann, it looked as if the Tigers were going to go down in defeat 6-4. Then, Norm Cash hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 10th to win the game and sent the hometown fans into a wild celebratory frenzy. With the victory Detroit's magic number is down to 1.

1971 AL Replay- Sept. 25 NY vs. Det

September 25, 1971
Willie Horton's return from the DL was a 'smashing' success for the Tigers tonight as Detroit defeated the NY Yankees 13-7. Horton hit a 2-run homer in his first plate appearance in more than a month in the 1st inning then, then added another 2-run blast his next time up in the 2nd while going 3 for 5 and driving in 5 runs. The Tigers hit 6 hr's on the night and Les Cain picked up his 14th victory of the season. Detroit now has a 4 game lead over 2nd place Baltimore, who lost tonight in Cleveland, and with only a few games left in the season can breath a little easier. Detroit's magic number is down to 2.

1971 AL Replay-Sept. 17 Oakland A's clinch!

September 17, 1971

The Oakland A's clinched the AL West Division today with a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. The A's have a 14 game lead over 2nd place Chicago and will now be able to rest some players while getting ready for the post season.
Meanwhile, over in the AL East, the streaking Baltimore Orioles arrived in Detroit for the start of a big 4 game series vs. the 1st place Tigers and won the opening game by the score of 12-3. With the lopsided win, Baltimore closed Detroit's division lead to 1.5 games. The red-hot Orioles have now gone 15-3 in their last 18 games while the Tigers have been playing mediocre baseball at best, going 9-9 in their last 18. The next 3 games of this series could very well go a long way in determining the final outcome in the East.

1971 AL Replay Standings as of Sept. 13

September 13, 1971

The Detroit Tigers head into Baltimore for a 3 game series against the red-hot Orioles starting with a doubleheader today. The Bengals lead the Birds by 4.5 games in the AL East but Baltimore has gone 9-1 their last 10 games. With 7 games left against each other this year these last few weeks of the season could be very interesting.
Over in the AL West, the Oakland A's continue to hold a commanding 13 game lead over 2nd place Chicago. The A's are 5 games away from clinching the division.

1971 NL Replay-Sept.10 Pittsburgh Pirates clinch!

September 10,1971

The Pittsburg Pirates clinched the NL Eastern Division crown with their victory last night and are currently on an 11 game winning streak. The Pirates lead 2nd place Chicago by 20 games now but its another story over in the NL West. A tight pennant race is still going on with the San Francisco Giants holding a slim 1/2 game lead over 2nd place Los Angeles. The Dodgers and Giants have been battling all year long and the outcome probably won't be determined until the last few games of the season.

1971 AL Replay-News

September 5, 1971

The Detroit Tigers announced today that Willie Horton has been put on the 15 day disabled list retroactive to August 28. Horton was beaned in a game in Chicago on August 27 and has been slow to recover resulting in his being placed on the DL.
In other news, the Chicago White Sox held a press conference this morning and announced that 2nd baseman Mike Andrews will miss the rest of the regular season. Andrews was injured in a collision at 1st base during a game against the Minnesota Twins on September 1. X-rays have revealed a broken wrist that will sideline him the rest of the year. Mike was having a career year this season, leading the AL with a .338BA. Having only 364 at bats at this point in the season, Andrews will not qualify for the batting title even if his average still leads the league at seasons end.

1971 AL Replay- September 4 Det vs. NY

September 4, 1971

Joe Coleman picked up his 20th win of the season as Detroit defeated New York 7-2 tonight at Yankee Stadium. Joe gave up a 2 run homer to Roy White in the bottom half of the 1st but that was all the home team could muster as Coleman shut them down the rest of the way getting a complete game victory. Home runs by Norm Cash and Ike Brown as well as a 2 run double by Al Kaline powered the Detroit hitting attack.

1971 AL Replay- Standings as of September 1

September 1, 1971

The ML baseball season heads into the final month finding the Detroit Tigers and Oakland A's leading their respective divisions in the American League. The Tigers lead 2nd place Baltimore by 7.5 games in the AL East while Oakland has a nice 10.5 game cushion over the Chicago White Sox in the AL West.
Baltimore was picked as the AL favorites at the beginning of the year but haven't gotten the pitching excellence or hitting consistency expected of them. The Tigers meanwhile, have gotten excellent pitching from their 3 top starters: Mickey Lolich, Joe Coleman, and Les Cain. Their bullpen has been suspect however, with only Tom Timmermann and Bill Denehy pitching well consistantly. The Detroit ballclub has gotten timely, explosive hitting this year to win many games with Norm Cash and Willie Horton leading the way. If Baltimore doesn't pick up the pace, the AL East pennant may be decided before the final week of the season.
The Oakland A's in the AL West have been the most consistant team in the AL this year. Getting excellent pitching from their starters and from their bullpen. Vida Blue and Jim 'Catfish' Hunter have put on the most impressive displays of pitching prowess while Reggie Jackson will have to be considered a prime candidate for AL MVP for his batting contributions. The A's have to be the favorites to win it all in the AL this season.
