1934 AL Replay Recap-June 1

June 1, 1934

The 1st two months of the '34 season are over for the AL and the Detroit Tigers are in 1st place with a 4.5 game lead over the 2nd place New York Yankees. While the season is still young, it looks like Detroit and New York will be the two teams battling for the AL Crown this year because the rest of the league seems to be mediocre at best. The other 6 teams in the junior circut are all playing sub .500 ball. There have been some good individual performences on these teams like Heinie Manush's .403 average for the Washington club and Hal Trosky's (pictured) 16 HR, and 43 RBI for the Cleveland Indians, but the Tigers and Yankees look to be the runaway favorites for the'34 AL title.
Detroit has been hitting on all cylinders since the season started and have a combined team BA of .301. Charlie Gehringer .365, Goose Goslin .355 and Hank Greenberg .331 have led the way for the Detroit ballclub. Pitcher Firpo Marberry is tied with Lefty Gomez of the Yanks for most wins in the AL with 7 while Elden Auker has been supperb coming out of the bullpen and spot-starting for the Tigers. For New York, slugger Lou Gehrig (pictured) has been putting up impressive numbers: .369 BA, 13 HR, 48 RBI and is at or near the top of all 3 hitting catagories in the AL.

1934 NL Replay Recap-June 1

June 1, 1934

The month of May is in the books for the National League. As of June 1, the St. Louis Cardinals are in 1st place with a 4.5 game lead over the 2nd place New York Giants. The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburg Pirates are the other two teams in the 1st division.
The Cardinals are being led offensively by Joe 'Ducky' Medwick .370/9/34, Rip Collins .347/9/32, and Spud Davis .368/3/31 while getting outstanding pitching from the likes of Dizzy Dean 7-2/2.05 and Tex Carlton 6-2/1.81. But it is Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell, and Hal Schumacher of the Giants who have put up the top performances over the first 2 months of the '34 season. Ott (pictured) leads the NL in all 3 of the top offensive catagories: Batting Average- .383, Home Runs- 14, and RBI- 42. In the pitching catagories, Schumacher is 1st with 7 wins and Hubbell, who has 6 wins, is tops with the best ERA in the NL- 1.71. This season is shaping up to be a real battle between the defending champion Giants and the impressive looking Cardinals.

1934 NL Replay- May 20, St.Louis at NY

May 20, 1934

Dizzy Dean (pictured) outdueled Carl Hubbell leading the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the Giants. In a battle between the top 2 teams in the NL, Dean (6-2) was outstanding on the mound, carrying a no-hitter into the 8th inning! (I was managing the Giants) In the 8th, Blondy Ryan singled with one out to break up the no-hit bid. St. Louis scored twice off Hubbell in the 6th and that was all Dean needed to pick up his 6th win of the season and increasing the 1st place Cardinals lead to 2.5 games over the Giants.

Dizzy Dean took a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals

topped the New York Giants by a score of 2 to 1 at Polo Grounds.

Dean(6-2) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the New

York batters. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings

lowering his ERA from 2.36 to 2.06. The right-handed Dean lost his no-hit

bid when Blondy Ryan singled with one out in the 8th inning. The game was a

scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

Carl Hubbell(5-2) took the loss. Frankie Frisch was very impressed with his

pitcher, Dean, 'He had unusually good pitch placement this afternoon. It was

almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat'

1934 AL Replay- May 19 NY vs. DET

May 19, 1934

After dropping the first 2 games allowing Detroit to move past them into 1st place in the AL, the New York Yankees were looking to win the final game of the series. They had their ace Lefty Gomez (6-0, pictured) going for them on the hill, but it was the Tigers who won an exciting game 5-3.
Detroit was first to score, picking up 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th. The Yankees tied it up in the top of the 6th scoring 2 runs but the Tigers came right back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 6th to retake the lead 4-2.
The Tigers made some defensive changes and brought in Elden Auker to pitch in the 8th inning. The Yankees got a run off of Auker making it 4-3 but had the tieing run thrown out at the plate when pinch runner Dixie Walker tried to score on a flyball from pinchhitter Frank Crosetti. It was defensive replacement Jo-Jo White that caught the flyball in cf and threw a one-hop strike to catcher Mickey Cochrane who applied the tag on a sliding Walker, completing a doubleplay and ending the inning.
Detroit picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the 8th making it 5-3 but when Red Rolfe singled with 1 out in the top of the 9th bringing the tieing run to the plate for NY, the Tigers brought in lefty Chief Hogsett (pictured) to face the next 2 scheduled hitters, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Hogsett struckout Ruth and got Gehrig to popout, preserving the win for Detroit and giving them a 2 game lead over NY in the AL standings. Vic Sorrell (4-1) Tiger starting pitcher, got the win and Gomez was handed his 1st loss of the season.

1934 NL Replay Recap-May 18, 1934

The St. Louis Cardinals have gone 15-1 since a slow start at the beginning of the season and now lead the New York Giants by 2.5 games. Getting timely hitting by the likes of Rip Collins and Joe Medwick (pictured) along with great pitching from Dizzy Dean (pictured) and others, the 'Gas House Gang' looks to be a formidable favorite this year.
