1971 AL Replay- Aug. 24 Min vs. Det

August 24,1971

Shortstop Eddie Brinkman helped lead the Detroit Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins tonight with his bat as well as his glove. Ed had his best game of the season at the plate going 3 for 4 and driving in 3 runs. Brinkman has been a regular fixture in the Detroit lineup this season because of his defensive play but tonight it was his hitting, as well as his glove play, that earned Detroit the win. Besides starting 3 rally killing doubleplays Ed had the key hit in the bottom of the 8th, breaking a 2-2 tie. The Twins walked Aurelio Rodriguez loading the bases with 2 outs to pitch to Brinkman. Eddie then drove a pitch up the left-center field gap, clearing the bases and providing the Tigers with the winning margin.

August 10, 1971

Bill Singer of the Los Angeles Dodgers threw the first no-hitter in the NL this year by shutting down the Philadelphia Phillies tonight in LA. The Dodgers needed the pitching gem from Singer as they were only able to score one run themselves. Singer struck out 10 and walked 2 in picking up his 11th win of the season.

Bill Singer(11-5) was on top of his game in Los Angeles as he tossed a beauty

of a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Los Angeles Dodgers

won by a score of 1 to 0.

The partisan crowd cheered every Philadelphia out from the 7th inning on. He

walked 2 Philadelphia batters. The Los Angeles players and coaches started

to leave Singer alone with his thoughts after the game reached the 7th

inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you could hear a pin drop

every time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion after every out. Singer

whiffed an impressive total of 10 Philadelphia batters. The Philadelphia

batters went down meekly in the 9th.

Barry Lersch(8-11) suffered the loss. 'Singer made us look bad' Frank

Lucchesi said. 'I've seen a lot of good performances in my time and this one

will be tucked away in my memory bank for a long time to come'

Willie Horton continued his assault on Red Sox pitching in the final game of a 5 game series in Boston by going 4 for 5 and hitting a game winning 2 run homer in the 11th inning, propelling the Detroit Tigers to a 9-5 victory. Dick McAuliffe(pictured) went 4 for 6 with 2 hr's and 5 rbi, accouning for all the Detroit scoring in regulation, but it was Horton's home run in extra innings that was the final blow allowing the Tigers to win the game and take the series from the Sox 4 games to 1.

Second baseman Dick McAuliffe smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the potent

Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox in 11 innings 9 to 5 at Fenway

Park.

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Detroit was victorious

in the 11th inning. The big moment was provided by Willie Horton who

deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he popped a two-run clout over

the fence (his 25th of the season). Despite losing, Boston out-hit Detroit

16 to 12.

Tom Timmermann(8-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory.

Ken Brett(2-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'Some days it just all

comes together, and this was one of them' McAuliffe said. 'I've been seeing

the ball pretty well lately.'

August 8, 1971

Willie Horton drove in 6 runs with 2 hr's and Mickey Lolich won his 20th game leading the Detroit Tigers to a 9-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Horton has simply been in a groove lately. He hit a grand slam home run in the first inning and a 2 run shot in the 7th. Thru the first 4 games of this 5 game series in Boston, he has gone 9 for 18 with 6 home runs and 16 RBI! Lolich didn't have one of his best outings but still pitched good enough to become the first pitcher in the Major Leagues to win 20 games this season. Billy Martin, the Tigers' manager, had planned on giving Horton the day off but Willie asked to be put in the lineup because he felt he 'was in a zone.' I'm sure Martin is glad he listened.

Left fielder Willie Horton smacked 2 homeruns as the Detroit Tigers defeated

the Boston Red Sox by the score of 9 to 6 at Fenway Park.

Horton had a big day with his bat. He quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand

Slam in the 1st inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 24th of the

season) in the 7th inning. Detroit finished with 9 hits in the victory.

The victory was credited to Mickey Lolich(20-7) who went 8 innings, allowing 6

runs. The loss was charged to Luis Tiant(4-4). He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks

without retiring a batter.

1971 AL Replay -Aug 5 Det. vs. Bsn.

August 5, 1971
In a wild game at Fenway Park tonight, Willie Horton(pictured) hit 3 home runs and drove in 7, but the Tigers still lost to the Red Sox 11-9. Good pitching was not to be found in this game where the lead changed hands 5 times before Boston finally came out on top after a 4 run 7th. Detroit out-hit Boston 12-9 and out-homered the Sox 4-2, but it still wasn't enough firepower as the Tiger 'pen couldn't hold a lead.

In a tight game it was the Boston Red Sox 11, the Detroit Tigers 9 at Fenway

Park.

George Scott had a good evening at the plate. He doubled scoring a run in the

1st inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 20th of the

season) in the 7th inning. This was a game of many highs and lows for the

home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.

Bill Lee(3-4) was the winner allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Lee was helped out

by Sparky Lyle who recorded his 16th save. Ron Perranoski(2-4) took the loss

in relief.

Willie Horton launched 3 homeruns for Detroit but his effort was wasted in the

loss.

1971 AL Replay-July 25 Oak. vs. Det.

July 25,1 971

The Detroit Tigers belted 5 home runs, 3 by Norm Cash, defeating the Oakland A's 6-5. In the second inning, Detroit pulled off a baseball rareity when they hit back-back-back home runs off A's starter Chuck Dobson. Cash led off the inning, hitting his 24th homer of the year. Willie Horton was up next and he connected for a monster blast into the left field upper deck. Bill Freehan followed Horton and he put one in the seats. Cash hit a 2 run homer in his next AB but the A's came back to tie the game at 5. Then, in the bottom of the 8th, Cash hit his 3rd home run of the game, a 2 out shot off tough lefty Darold Knowles. That run held up to be the game winner for the Tigers.

Norm Cash cracked 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Detroit Tigers beat the
Oakland A's by a score of 6 to 5.

It seemed that Oakland pitching was serving up softballs for Cash to hit. He
blasted a solo shot in the 2nd inning, blasted a two-run home run in the 3rd
inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 26th of the season) in the 8th
inning. Detroit had 9 hits for the afternoon.

The win was credited to Dean Chance(6-7) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing
no runs. Chance got help from Fred Scherman who was credited with his 10th
save. Darold Knowles(2-2) was the loser in relief.

'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Cash said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'
