1934 World Series- Game 2



October4, 1934

In a very exciting game at Navin Field in Detroit, the Tigers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in extra innings 6-5. Tommy Bridges and the Detroit Tigers were sailing along with a 2-0 lead heading into the 9th inning when the Cardinals struck. St. Louis had been shutout in game 1 and had failed to score thru the 1st 8 innings of this game before plateing 5 runs in the top of the 9th to take a 5-2 lead. But the Tigers came roaring back in the bottom of the 9th scoring 3 times, tieing the game at 5 and sending the contest into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th inning Detroit 3rd baseman Marv Owen tripled with 1 out. Flea Clifton ran for Owen and scored the game winning run on pinchhitter Gee Walker's sac. fly into deep centerfield. The teams now head to St. Louis for game 3 tomorrow with Detroit holding a 2-0 series lead.

29,769 fans were treated to a fine game at Navin Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Detroit Tigers won by the
slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.

The score was tied at 5 after nine. Detroit was victorious in the 11th
inning. After an out was recorded, Marv Owen tripled. Gee Walker next to
the plate and he hit a deep fly giving Detroit the victory and sending the
29,769 home-town fans home happy. The game was a scoreless duel until the
6th inning.

The winning pitcher was Vic Sorrell(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Jim
Lindsey(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits
in 2 and 1/3 innings.
