1934 AL Replay- Aug.1, Det. at Clv.

August 1, 1934

The Detroit Tigers pulled to within 1 game of the AL leading New York Yankees today by defeating the Cleveland Indians 9-4. Hank Greenberg (pictured) had a big day at the plate for the Tigers hitting 2 hr's and driving in 7. It was a close game, 4-3 Detroit, when Greenberg came up in the 8th inning and hit his 2nd 3-run homer of the game, a mammoth blast to deep center field. Combined with New York's 7-2 loss to Boston today, the victory allowed the Tigers to inch closer to the top spot in the AL.

Hank Greenberg smacked 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the Detroit Tigers topped

the Cleveland Indians by a score of 9 to 4 at League Park.

Greenberg was unconscious all day. The Cleveland fans hated to see him

approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He lofted

a three-run bomb in the 1st inning, doubled which scored a run in the 3rd

inning and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 23rd of the season) in the 8th

inning. Detroit had 13 hits for the game and Cleveland had 7.

Vic Sorrell(7-5) went 8 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. The losing

pitcher was Willis Hudlin(11-3). He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.

The Detroit ballclub's record now stands at 60-38. With the loss, Cleveland

has a record of 5-5 lately, 53-44 overall.
