April 17,1934 The 1934 NL season got underway today and the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Braves were all winners in their first game of the year. The outstanding performance of the day has to go to Si Johnson of the Reds who started for Cincinnati and went the distance, allowing only 3 hits in getting a shutout 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Johnson(1-0) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Chicago hitters. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Lon Warneke(0-1) was charged with the loss. 'Johnson took our guys to school' Charlie Grimm said. Joe Medwick lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 1st of the season) making St. Louis the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. St. Louis totaled 7 hits on the afternoon.
