1934 AsPlayed Replay-NL Season Openers








April 17,1934

The 1934 NL season got underway today and the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Braves were all winners in their first game of the year. The outstanding performance of the day has to go to Si Johnson of the Reds who started for Cincinnati and went the distance, allowing only 3 hits in getting a shutout 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Si Johnson was on top of his game, blanking Chicago on just 3 hits as the

Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago Bruins by the score of 1 to 0 at Crosley

Field.



Johnson(1-0) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Chicago

hitters. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.

Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.



Lon Warneke(0-1) was charged with the loss. 'Johnson took our guys to school'

Charlie Grimm said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my job a

whole lot easier!'

Pepper Martin jacked one out of the ballyard and Dizzy Dean delivered 9 solid

innings at Sportsman's Park as the St. Louis Cardinals won a thriller over

the Pittsburgh Pirates in, 2 to 1.



St. Louis scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Joe

Medwick lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 1st of the season) making St.

Louis the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. St. Louis

totaled 7 hits on the afternoon.



The victory was credited to Dean(1-0) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.

Heinie Meine(0-1) ended up with the loss.

Ed Brandt went the distance and Hal Lee had 3 base hits as the Boston Braves

beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 7 to 4.



Boston came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 3 runs

on 2 hits. Bill Urbanski led off and started the rally when he drew a walk.

Red Worthington stepped into the batter's box and he lined a base-hit. Wally

Berger then lofted a three-run bomb (his 1st of the season). Boston rapped

out 13 hits for the afternoon.



The winning pitcher was Brandt(1-0) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Boom-Boom

Beck(0-1) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 3 runs and 2 hits in 1 and

2/3 innings.

Carl Hubbell tossed a complete game as the New York Giants defeated the

Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to 2 at Polo Grounds.



Hubbell(1-0) had a strong outing. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 2

walks in 9 innings. New York finished with 7 hits in the victory.



Jumbo Jim Elliott(0-1) was hit with the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in
