1934 AsPlayed Replay-AL Season Openers

April 17,1934

The 1934 American League season got underway today and the Detroit Tigers spoiled the home-opener for White Sox fans by defeating Chicago 8-5. Goose Goslin(pictured) and Mickey Cochrane led the hitting attack for the Bengals.
In other openers: Boston, New York and Cleveland were all winners.

Goose Goslin had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Detroit Tigers outscored the



Chicago White Sox 8 to 5.







Detroit wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning with 3 runs using



4 hits. Billy Rogell led off and keyed the rally when he stroked a one-base



hit. Charlie Gehringer came to the plate and slapped a single. Gehringer



took second on the throw. Goslin then lined a single bringing in two



baserunners. Hank Greenberg was up next and he laced a base-knock. Mickey



Cochrane stepped into the box and hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run



of the inning. Detroit managed 15 hits in their victory.







Firpo Marberry(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings and



allowing 5 runs. Eldon Auker recorded the save, his 1st. Sam Jones(0-1) was



the loser. He was hit hard and gave up 14 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.

Third baseman Tony Lazzeri had 3 base hits and 3 RBI and Lefty Gomez was able



to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at Shibe Park



as the New York Yankees embarrassed the Philadelphia Athletics by the



lopsided score of 11 to 1.







Gomez(1-0) gave New York a solid outing. He didn't allow much, just 6 hits



and 2 walks in 9 innings. New York had 11 hits for the afternoon.







Sugar Cain(0-1) was the loser. He had trouble throwing strikes and issued 9



walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Eddie Moore had 2 base hits and Oral Hildebrand completed the game without



help from the bullpen as the Cleveland Indians won at League Park in dramatic



fashion over the St. Louis Browns, the final score, 2 to 1.







Cleveland won the game with a run in the 9th inning. Willie Kamm doubled.



Moore came next and he doubled making Cleveland the victors to the delight of



the home town faithful. Cleveland had a total of 9 hits for the game.







Hildebrand(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. George



Blaeholder(0-1) was given the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 9



hits and 2 walks.

Billy Werber had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the



Washington Senators 11 to 4 at Fenway Park.







Boston had 4 runs cross the plate in the 2nd inning with the help of 3 hits.



The key offensive moment was provided by Werber who made the home-town crowd



a happy bunch when he doubled plating all three baserunners. Boston rapped



out 12 hits for the afternoon.







The win went to Gordon Rhodes(1-0) who allowed 4 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.



Rhodes was helped out by Hank Johnson who recorded his 1st save. Earl



Whitehill(0-1) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 6 hits and 2



walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
