2009 MLB Season

Well, I can't wait any longer. I'm ready for the 2009 baseball season to get underway! All the teams have been updated to their current 2009 rosters. Pitching rotations and batting lineups for all the teams are complete. Any trades, signings, or roster moves that occur before the actual MLB season starts in a couple of weeks will be made to my season wherever I'm at in it. The 1934 season replay will be put on hold for the time being, although I do see me playing an occasional game or two during the '09 season. The following 2 posts show the standings of the '34 season as of today.
So, the 2009 gets started today with the April 5th season opener: Atlanta Braves at the Philadelphia Phillies!

Homeruns- H.Trosky-3(6th), Z.Bonura(1st)

First baseman Hal Trosky slammed 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Monte Pearson

allowed Walter Johnson to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at

Comiskey Park where the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 7 to

4.

Trosky was a source of great heartache for the Chicago faithful all day. He

just kept pounding out hits! He lofted a three-run bomb in the 1st inning,

ripped a solo home run in the 4th inning and blasted a solo shot (his 6th of

the season) in the 5th inning. Both teams totaled 13 hits on the afternoon.

Pearson(1-2) lasted until the end allowing 4 runs for the win. Sam Jones(0-3)

was the loser. He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of work.

'Trosky led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Pearson

said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'

Red Ruffing tossed a complete game at Griffith Stadium as the New York Yankees

beat the Washington Senators 4 to 3.

In the 2nd inning New York went on top for good scoring one runner on 2 hits.

Washington threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

The win was credited to Ruffing(2-1) who went the whole way allowing 3 runs.

Earl Whitehill(1-2) was charged with the loss.

Despite losing Joe Cronin was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over this

one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one of a

dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'

Philadelphia Athletics by a score of 5 to 4 at Fenway Park.

Boston drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning as

they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. Philadelphia could do no damage in the

9th.

The victory was credited to Welch(1-2) who went the distance, allowing 4 runs.

Joe Cascarella(0-1) suffered the loss. By surrending 5 runs in 7 innings his

ERA jumped from 5.40 to 5.87.

runs on 2 hits. Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came

up short.

Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 3 to 2.

Cantwell(1-1) pitched well for Boston in their victory. He was reached for 8

hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Philadelphia had a chance to come back in the

9th but they came up short.

Ed Holley(0-2) absorbed the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits

and 4 walks in 7 innings. Bill McKechnie was beaming after the game, 'Not

only were we making good contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have

about it!'

the ballyard and had 4 RBI as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the New York

Giants 11 to 2 at Polo Grounds.

Frederick provided much of the offense. He rifled a three-run blast (his 1st

of the season) in the 5th inning and laced a single knocking in a run in the

9th inning. Brooklyn totaled 14 hits on the afternoon.

Mungo(1-1) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Fred

Fitzsimmons(1-1) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good,

crowd when he smacked a single scoring two baserunners. Chicago took care of

Pittsburgh with no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

The victory went to Roy Joiner(1-0) who went 7 innings, allowing 6 runs. Bud

Tinning gained credit for his 2nd save. Hal Smith(0-1) was the losing

pitcher. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 5 walks

St. Louis took the lead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning plating an

isolated run. That was all the offense they were to need. St. Louis banged

out 11 hits on the afternoon.

Dean(2-2) went the distance for the shutout. Paul Derringer(1-2) was given the

loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
