1934 AL Replay News

Aug 4, 1934

The Detroit Tigers announced today that they have acquired pitcher Alvin 'General' Crowder off waivers from the Washington Senators. The 35 year old veteran pitcher has spent his career playing for the St. Louis Browns and Senators but he has struggled this year and Washington had placed him on waivers prior to giving him his unconditional release. Detroit manager Mickey Cochrane said he plans on placing the General into the starting rotation. 'No, we think he can help us catch those Yankees' Cochrane replied when asked if 'didn't he think Crowder was washed up?' Crowder's first start with his new team will come at home on Aug. 8th against the Browns.

August 1, 1934

The Detroit Tigers pulled to within 1 game of the AL leading New York Yankees today by defeating the Cleveland Indians 9-4. Hank Greenberg (pictured) had a big day at the plate for the Tigers hitting 2 hr's and driving in 7. It was a close game, 4-3 Detroit, when Greenberg came up in the 8th inning and hit his 2nd 3-run homer of the game, a mammoth blast to deep center field. Combined with New York's 7-2 loss to Boston today, the victory allowed the Tigers to inch closer to the top spot in the AL.

Hank Greenberg smacked 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the Detroit Tigers topped

the Cleveland Indians by a score of 9 to 4 at League Park.

Greenberg was unconscious all day. The Cleveland fans hated to see him

approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He lofted

a three-run bomb in the 1st inning, doubled which scored a run in the 3rd

inning and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 23rd of the season) in the 8th

inning. Detroit had 13 hits for the game and Cleveland had 7.

Vic Sorrell(7-5) went 8 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. The losing

pitcher was Willis Hudlin(11-3). He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.

The Detroit ballclub's record now stands at 60-38. With the loss, Cleveland

has a record of 5-5 lately, 53-44 overall.

1934 AL Replay Standings-August 1

August 1, 1934

The 1st place New York Yankees lead over the Detroit Tigers has been reduced to 2 games as the month of July comes to an end and 'the dog days of summer' begin for this 1934 baseball season. After a poor June record the Tigers started July on an equally dismal note. But over the last 10 games of the month they seemed to have regained their batting stroke and have gotten better pitched games from their starters. The bullpen does remain a big concern though and manager Mickey Cochrane has resorted to using his top starter, Firpo Marberry, as well as starters Vic Sorrell and Schoolboy Rowe in relief roles. Eldon Auker, who had been getting the bulk of the relief work, has now been inserted into the starting rotation because of the use of the starters.
The Cleveland Indians went 20-13 in July, best in the league, and they are only 7.5 games out now.

My Man Cave

Inspired by a thread from the SOM Fan Forum, I've taken some photos of my 'man cave' where I do all things SOM and posted them here. (Only the top photo can't be enlarged, don't know why.?.?)

The colored pencil drawings of Barry Sanders, Gordie Howe, Grant Hil,l etc. were done by my son Ryan Stanton. He's done many drawings over the years and these aren't even his best; obviously I'm very proud of him.

1934 Replay- All Star Game

July 10, 1934

The Polo Grounds, NY:

In only the 2nd All Star Game ever played between the rival NL and AL, the NL destroyed the AL 12-1. Wally Berger of the NL Boston Braves smashed 3 hr's and drove in 7 runs leading his team to victory. A parade to the mound of the AL's best pitchers were unable to stop the NL onslaught of 17 hits, while the AL battsmen only managed 4 hits against the NL's best.

Center fielder Wally Berger smacked 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the National
League team crushed the American League ballclub 12 to 1.

Berger punished American League with his bat. He cracked a solo homerun in
the 2nd inning, belted a three-run homer in the 3rd inning and lofted a
three-run bomb (his 3rd of the season) in the 6th inning. American League
was out-hit by National League, 17 hits to 4.

The victory was credited to Dizzy Dean(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Lefty Gomez(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 4 hits and no
walks in 2 innings.

Berger was jubilant after the game 'Let me see a box-score' he joked, 'I want
to see how that game looks on paper.'
