July 4, 1971



The 1st place Detroit Tigers completed a 3 game sweep at home against the 2nd place Baltimore Orioles by defeating the birds 8-2 on this sunny holiday afternoon. Aurelio Rodriguez led the hitting attack against the Orioles and wound up with 6 hits in 11 ab, 2 hr, and 9 rbi in the series. The Tigers now lead the Orioles 6 games to 5 in head to head games this year and have opened up their lead in the AL East pennant race.

Third baseman Aurelio Rodriguez connected with a 'big fly' and had 5 RBI and
Joe Coleman Jr was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game at Tiger Stadium as the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore
Orioles by the count of 8 to 2.

Rodriguez enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He lined a one-base hit plating two
runs in the 1st inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his
8th of the season) in the 7th inning. Detroit had 11 hits for the afternoon.

Coleman Jr(12-5), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Mike
Cuellar(7-10) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits
and 2 walks.
