Tommy Bridges came through with a solid 9 innings at Navin Field as the

Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 4 to 0.

New York never recovered after Detroit took the lead in the 2nd inning scoring

one runner. That early run support was enough for Bridges(20-10) and

Detroit. Detroit rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.

Lefty Gomez(22-9) was given the loss. Detroit continued their winning ways,

with their streak now at 6 games and counting. 'I'm glad to get the win',

Bridges said. 'We've got some good momentum going now.'

1934 AL Replay Standings-September 17

September 17,1934

The New York Yankees arrived in Detroit last night and will play the 1st game of a 4 game series today, a series that could go a long way in determining this season's AL Champion. The Yankees have a .5 game lead over the Tigers but the Detroit team does have a game in hand. Both ballclubs have been playing very good this September and with only 12 games left in the season, Detroit is hoping to make a big move towards winning the pennant.

August 14, 1934

Detroit and New York split the doubleheader today with the Yankees taking the 1st game 7-4 and Detroit coming from behind in dramatic fashion to win game 2 by the score of 12-7. Schoolboy Rowe and Red Ruffing were locked in a pitchers duel in game 2 when Lou Gehrig and Sammy Byrd both connected for 2 run homers in the bottom of the 8th giving the Yankees a 6-3 lead heading into the 9th. In the 9th, the Tigers loaded the bases with 2 outs when usually sure-handed 2nd baseman Don Heffner muffed a groundball off the bat of Jo-Jo White. Detroit's player/manager Mickey Cochrane was up next and he cleared the bases with a double to deep center field tying the game at 6. The Tigers exploded for 6 more runs in the top of the 10th to earn the victory and a split of the doubleheader.
