Steve Kline shutout Cleveland while allowing the New York bullpen a day-off as
the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 8 to 0 at
Yankee Stadium.
Ron Blomberg enjoyed a big day at the plate. He lost the ball over the fence
for three runs (his 2nd of the season) in the 3rd inning, laced a one-base
hit in the 5th inning and doubled in the 7th inning. New York had 9 hits for
the afternoon.
For Kline(8-8) it was his 2nd shutout this year. Alan Foster(3-6) absorbed the
loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.

The Chicago White Sox cruised to a 6 to 1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers
at County Stadium.
Chicago took the lead for good in the 7th inning scoring one runner. Tom Egan
reached on an error. Luis Alvarado came next and he doubled. After an out
was recorded, A balk was stepped up to the plate and he called scoring the
run. Chicago banged out 7 hits on the night.
Tommy John(11-2) allowed 1 run in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Jim
Slaton(1-6) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 4 hits and 4 walks in
7 innings.
KANSAS CITY AT CALIFORNIA

Tony Gonzalez homered and had 2 RBI as the California Angels topped the Kansas
City Royals by a score of 2 to 1 at Anaheim Stadium.
Tom Murphy(5-12) pitched a fine game. He went 8 innings surrendering 5 hits
and 2 walks. Kansas City had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Lloyd Allen recorded the save, his 9th. Mike Hedlund(1-8) ended up with the
loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks.
MINNESOTA AT OAKLAND

Left fielder Joe Rudi launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Vida Blue allowed
just 2 hits as the Oakland A's defeated the struggling Minnesota Twins 8 to 1
at Oakland Coliseum.
Rudi provided much of the offense. He bombed a two-run dinger in the 1st
inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 6th of the season) in the
2nd inning. Oakland totaled 8 hits on the night.
Blue(13-4), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. The loss was
charged to Ray Corbin(5-5). 'He came out with good stuff,' Dick Williams
said about Blue. 'He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.'
WASHINGTON AT BOSTON

At Fenway Park the Boston Red Sox easily handled the Washington Senators by
the score of 8 to 4.
Boston scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 8th inning when they
scored 5 runs on 5 hits. The big moment was provided by Billy Conigliaro who
brought the crowd to their feet when he cleared the fences for a two-run home
run (his 12th of the season). Boston had 11 hits for the night while
Washington had 8.
The win was credited to Jim Lonborg(2-4) who went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 4
runs. Denny Riddleberger(1-4) was given the loss in relief. He allowed 5
runs and 5 hits in 1 inning.
DETROIT AT BALTIMORE

Les Cain struck out 10 batters and Bill Freehan had 2 base hits as the Detroit
Tigers topped the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 9 to 3 at Memorial
Stadium.
Detroit scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning when they
tallied 6 runs on 4 hits. Detroit rapped out 10 hits for the night.
Cain(6-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 3 runs.
Pat Dobson(10-7) was charged with the loss. Cain was humble when questioned
about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches tonight.
But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That
was an extremely well called game!'
