1971 Replay-World Series Game 1

October 10, 1971

The Detroit Tigers defeated the San Francisco Giants in a wild affair at rain soaked Tiger Stadium, winning game 1 of the World Series 11-8. Willie McCovey hit 2 home runs, the 2nd a 3-run shot in the 7th (I got 'bit' by robbing home run rule) giving the Giants what looked like an insurmountable 8-2 lead. But the Tigers came roaring back, getting 2 runs in the 7th and 7 runs in the 8th. In that 8th inning the Tigers got 5 runs with 2 outs. First, Mickey Stanley hit a 2-run blast then Bill Freehan cleared the bases with a 3-run double. Bill Denehy got the win for Detroit and Steve Hamilton took the loss for San Francisco. Game 2 tomorrow will see Juan Marichal (18-12) try to even things up vs. Joe Coleman (23-12) and the Tigers.

Gates Brown had 4 hits as the Detroit Tigers defeated the San Francisco Giants

11 to 8 at Tiger Stadium.

Detroit put a big number on the board in the 8th inning, which proved too much

for San Francisco to overcome when they blasted San Francisco for 7 runs on 7

hits. The big moment was provided by Mickey Stanley who brought a roar from

the partisan Tiger Stadium fans when he blasted a two-run home run (his 1st

of the season). Despite scoring in 5 separate innings, San Francisco could

not get the win.

Bill Denehy(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no

runs. Tom Timmermann earned the save, his 1st. Steve Hamilton(0-1) ended up

with the loss in relief.

1971 NL Replay Championship Game 5- Giants Win the Pennant!

October 7, 1971

In an exciting game the San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 and won the NL Championship! Pittsburgh left 10 runners on base and as was the case the whole game, they couldn't get the key hit in the 9th to tie the game. San Francisco led 3-2 going into the bottom of the 8th when Alan Gallagher hit a 2-run homer that seemed to clinch the victory for the Giants. The Pirates battled back in the 9th by scoring 2 runs, closing the score to 5-4, and still had runners on the corners with 2 outs. But Giants reliever Jerry Johnson struck-out Bob Robertson to end the game sending the Giants and their fans into a wild post-game celebration. San Francisco will now face Detroit in the World Series which will begin Oct. 10 in Detroit.
