1971 NL Replay Championship Game 5- Giants Win the Pennant!

October 7, 1971

In an exciting game the San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 and won the NL Championship! Pittsburgh left 10 runners on base and as was the case the whole game, they couldn't get the key hit in the 9th to tie the game. San Francisco led 3-2 going into the bottom of the 8th when Alan Gallagher hit a 2-run homer that seemed to clinch the victory for the Giants. The Pirates battled back in the 9th by scoring 2 runs, closing the score to 5-4, and still had runners on the corners with 2 outs. But Giants reliever Jerry Johnson struck-out Bob Robertson to end the game sending the Giants and their fans into a wild post-game celebration. San Francisco will now face Detroit in the World Series which will begin Oct. 10 in Detroit.

1971 NL Replay Championship- Game 2

October 3, 1971

The Pittsburgh Pirates evened up this NLCS 1-1 by defeating the San Francisco Giants in extra innings 4-3. Both clubs got good pitching from their starters Doc Ellis and Juan Marichal, and it looked like the Pirates were going to regret failing to score in the 6th inning when they loaded the bases with no outs but failed to get a run in. The game went into extra innings where in the bottom of the 10th, Willie Stargell hit the 3rd pitch from reliever Steve Hamilton into the centerfield seats for a no-doubt-about-it game winning homerun! The series will now shift to San Francisco where Bob Johnson 16-5 is scheduled to start for the Pirates while John Cumberland 11-9 will start for the Giants.

1971 NL Replay Championship-Game 1

October 2, 1971

The San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opening game of the '71 NL Championship Series. Pittsburgh led early in the game but after Pirates starter Steve Blass had to leave the game in the 6th due to an undisclosed injury, the Giants offense unloaded on the Pittsburgh bullpen and ended up winning by a score of 10-8. San Francisco was one team the Pirates had trouble with during the regular season, going 6-6 against them, and now face an uphill battle in this short, best of 5 game series. With only one game left at home, tomorrow's, the Pirates must get a good game from starter Doc Ellis who was 15-10 during the regular season. His pitching opponent will be Juan Marichal who was 18-12.
