| October 7, 1971 In an exciting game the San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 and won the NL Championship! Pittsburgh left 10 runners on base and as was the case the whole game, they couldn't get the key hit in the 9th to tie the game. San Francisco led 3-2 going into the bottom of the 8th when Alan Gallagher hit a 2-run homer that seemed to clinch the victory for the Giants. The Pirates battled back in the 9th by scoring 2 runs, closing the score to 5-4, and still had runners on the corners with 2 outs. But Giants reliever Jerry Johnson struck-out Bob Robertson to end the game sending the Giants and their fans into a wild post-game celebration. San Francisco will now face Detroit in the World Series which will begin Oct. 10 in Detroit. |

San Francisco set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 2 runners

push the needed runs across.
