August 8, 1971 Willie Horton drove in 6 runs with 2 hr's and Mickey Lolich won his 20th game leading the Detroit Tigers to a 9-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Horton has simply been in a groove lately. He hit a grand slam home run in the first inning and a 2 run shot in the 7th. Thru the first 4 games of this 5 game series in Boston, he has gone 9 for 18 with 6 home runs and 16 RBI! Lolich didn't have one of his best outings but still pitched good enough to become the first pitcher in the Major Leagues to win 20 games this season. Billy Martin, the Tigers' manager, had planned on giving Horton the day off but Willie asked to be put in the lineup because he felt he 'was in a zone.' I'm sure Martin is glad he listened. |

Left fielder Willie Horton smacked 2 homeruns as the Detroit Tigers defeated
the Boston Red Sox by the score of 9 to 6 at Fenway Park.
Horton had a big day with his bat. He quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand
Slam in the 1st inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 24th of the
season) in the 7th inning. Detroit finished with 9 hits in the victory.
The victory was credited to Mickey Lolich(20-7) who went 8 innings, allowing 6
runs. The loss was charged to Luis Tiant(4-4). He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks
without retiring a batter.
